The district of Newry and Mourne is an area of outstanding natural beauty. The scenery is stunning and there are many mountain walks and forest parks for you to enjoy. There are over 350 ancient monuments in Mourne dating from different periods in history. Legananny Dolmen (top left) is a great example giving the visitor an opportunity to appreciate the panorama that is the Mournes.

The Mourne Wall

This wall took over 18 years to complete. Built between 1904 and 1922, made of granite, it stands up to 8ft high and 3ft wide. It is 22 miles in length and connects the summits of no less than 15 mountains including Slieve Donard. The wall is still intact and is used as a marker for walkers. The best and longest being the Mourne way.
This route is almost entirely off road, traversing the foothill of the Mourne Mountains from Newcastle on the Irish Sea to Rostrevor on Carlingford Lough. The Mourne Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a unique, largely granite landscape with stunning views of coast, sea and countryside
