Enniskillen Castle (above right) was the medieval seat of the Maguires, chieftains of Fermanagh, who policed the jewel of the crown of county Fermanagh, Lough Erne, with a private navy of 1,500 boats. Lough Erne is the perfect location for watersports; from fishing to waterskiing to canoeing or cruising.
Pictured left, the Marble Arch Caves, where you can join a 90 minute guided tour which includes an underground boat trip on a subterranean lake. These are one of Europe's finest show caves allowing visitors to explore a fascinating, natural underworld of rivers, waterfalls, winding passages and lofty chambers. Comfortable walking shoes and a warm sweater are recommended.
The caves are situated in a National Nature Reserve, The Marble Arch Caves Geopark., which showcases some of the finest natural landscapes in Ireland and offers a window into the area's 650 million year past.
Enniskillen Castle, situated beside the River Erne, was built almost 600 years ago by Gaelic Maguire chieftains. Guarding one of the few passes into Ulster, it was strategically important throughout its history. In the 17th century it became an English garrison fort and later served as part of a military barracks. Fermanagh County Museum is located within and around the Castle.. Its award winning exhibitions cover the prehistory and natural history of Fermanagh, the county’s traditional rural life, local crafts and the celebrated pottery at Belleek. Another attraction within Enniskillen Castle is The Inniskillings Museum with its collection of uniforms, weapons, medals and memorabilia dating back to the 17th Century.
Jump on board the water bus, the Inishcruiser or the Lady of the lakes or better still hire your own boat and while away the hours exploring the waterways which include stretches of still-water canal, canalised river and a series of scenic lakes.
Necarne Castle, just outside Enniskillen, hosts the International three day event each September. This event attracts the stars of the eventing world both human and horse and is well worth a visit especially on cross country day.
Belleek Pottery nestles on the banks of the River Erne, established in 1887, the building ids now a visitor centre.
