The Causeway coast is one of the most stunning areas in Northern Ireland. dramatic cliffs, tranquil coves, golden beaches and some of the most unusual rock formations in the world.
To the left is a view of the Giants Causeway, built by the legendary Giant, Fin McCool, well no not really. This is one of the most unusual rock formations you will find, stretching under the sea to Scotland.. It is a must to see, breath taking in summer and totally stunning in the middle of winter when the foam from the sea falls like snow.
A few miles along the coast you come upon carick-a-rede rope bridge (above left). Not for the faint hearted but well worth the trek. This is not open in high winds or generally over the winter.
There are many beautiful beaches along the coast. To the left is Downhill , 7 miles of sand and surf just north of Portstewart and Porttrush. Portrush is a popular holiday stop over with its three beaches, The East strand unbroken for miles ending at Whitrocks. (above right).
This area is popular with surfers where the waves can get massive in the winter. If you are feeling adventurous a lesson with Irish team surfer, Martin Kelly is a must. If not, you can while away the hours in the many cafes around the Port or enjoy the views from the Royal Court Hotel. There are many Golf courses in the in the area, the Royal Portrush (links course) being renowned. .
Take the coast road from Larne and stick to the coast, it's well sign posted. There are any number of villages with the occasional craft/art gallery well worth the stop and of course the oldest Whisky distillery in the world, Bushmills. Don't be afraid to take diversions down to the sea where you come across coves, harbours, ancient churches and ruins but most of all take time to explore. For walkers and bird enthusiasts a trip by ferry to Rathlin Island is well worth testing the sea legs.
