Belfast Castle (above left) sits 400 ft above sea level on the slopes of Cave hill. This area is a country park offering fabulous views over the city, the river Lagan and beyond with walks to the top well laid out for the fitter. The fascinating story of Cave Hill, Belfast Castle and the Cave Hill Country Park is told in the newly refurbished Cave Hill visitor Centre on the second floor of the castle. Down in the cellars you can take time out over coffee or something more substantial.
The city of Belfast rests at the mouth of the river Lagan and is overlooked by the cave hill under which some say the great giant, Finn McCool slumbers. If you look closely, (above right), you can see the outline of his face watching over Belfast Lough.
Home of the Titanic
To the left is St Annes Cathedral around which the lively cathedral quarter has sprung. This is known as the arty and quirky side of town with many bars and cafes offering live music, story telling, poetry and comedy. Be sure to drop into Whites Tavern and the Duke of York, both you will find nestled away down entries. Also look out for 'Fresh Garbage' if you lean towards the rock, punk, biker or hippy trends.
Belfast City Hall, completed in 1906, sits on 1 1/2 acres of ground. It holds a commanding position in the city centre and hosted the Belfast eye which has now sadly been removed.
Free guided tours take you around this fascinating building. As you can see, if you double click the picture, this is a popular meeting place. Every Christmas there is a continental market with lots of atmosphere and mulled wine!!
On Belfast City tours you will see many murals. The one below depicts the story of the Titanc.
Queens University below dates back to 1849. The University area is a lively hub of activity all year with many pubs and clubs offering a variey of night life. Queens university hosts the annual Belfast Festival at Queen's and the Belfast Film Festival
Bottom left is the Crown Bar, Undoubtably one of the best bars in the world. No visit to Belfast is complete without experiencing the atmosphere here.
