From the High Kings of Ireland to the Saint that banished all snakes and from the legend of the hound Ulster to the outer reaches of our Universe, Armagh has it all. Here you can visit ancient earth-works, Cathedrals and the Armagh Planetarium all of which will stir your imagination.
Navan Fort (Emain Macha), was the seat of the ancient kings of Ulster, and is called after the goddess Macha. It was here that the great Irish mythical hero Cu Chulainn (the hound of Ulster) spent much of his youth before going out single-handedly to face the army of the equally mythical Queen Maeve advancing from Connacht. The Navan centre's facilities include an exhibition area, audio visual show, living history in a unique period dwelling, guided tour to fort, picnic area, children’s activities, café/restaurant and free coach and car parking.
In the City of Armagh there are two Cathedrals of St Patrick , one being the Church of Ireland and occupying the site where St Patrick had a church built in 445 while on the neighbouring hill is the Roman Catholic Cathedral originally built in 1840 but now spectacularly refurbished. Both dominate the skyline of Armagh City. The Church of Ireland Cathedral (top left) is home to he bones of Brian Boru, the last High King of Ireland. If you are lucky enough to catch the organ practice here you will never forget it. The Cathedral to the left is the Roman Catholic Cathedral and this is an imposing and beautiful building.
Saint Patrick's Trian Visitor Complex is located in the heart of Armagh City. There are three major exhibitions, The Armagh Story, (a step back in time to historic Armagh), Patrick's Testament (The Book of Armagh) and The Land of Lilliput (Jonathan Swifts most famous work 'Gullivers Travels' is encapsulated in the fantasy 'Land of Lilliput' and are narrated with the help of a 20 foot giant! Take a walk along the mall or visit the Armagh Observatory, founded in 1790. This is one of the UK and Ireland's leading scientific research establishments.
